When liquid water meets frozen water, which is more powerful? In this case, a small stream of water stood no chance against a wall of ice. Skillet Creek, pictured on this year’s calendar, once flowed along a relatively straight route to the Baraboo River. About 20,000 years ago, the leading edge of a glacier blocked the stream, forcing it to make a sharp turn to the north where it carved a new path through the landscape. The Wisconsin Geological Survey’s 2012 calendar features a lovely waterfull found along the “new” streambed.
