Private owners control 56% of Wisconsin’s forestland. How well they manage their land affects water quality, wildlife habitat, natural beauty, and timber availability. This publication explores how owners could be encouraged to better manage their forestland by being paid to do so.

The authors compare two groups of forest owners, those who are part of the Managed Forest Law program and those who are not. All in the former group have a detailed forest management plan to ensure that timber is available to the timber industry. Most in the second group have no written plan. This publication provides insight into the problems of devising incentive programs that appeal to forestland owners and to the general public (16 pages, January 2013).
